After a wonderful 10 days here in Oaxaca the team is preparing to return to the winter wonderland of Canada on Friday. It is hard to put into words how much our team has enjoyed each other over these eventful days! We have laughed together, prayed together, experienced many interesting challenges together, and deepened our relationships immeasurably over the course of our time here in Mexico.

This week has been a trying time for the staff of Casa Hogar because of the illness of a young teenage mother who is part of this community. She had some severe pain on the weekend and the doctor said she had kidney stones. When the pain came back on Tuesday they went into town looking for a urologist. He ruled out kidney stones and sent her to the hospital where it was found that she had appendicitis and was rushed into surgery. She is recovering in hospital and is expected to make a full recovery but it was a very dangerous situation that has left everyone a little shaken.

Wednesday evening was a night for outreach. One team (Bill, Doug, Jonathan, Jess and Leah) went to the men’s prison in Oaxaca to share with the inmates. Enrique is a local pastor who served as their guide looking after getting them into the prison but unfortunately he does not speak any English so communication was a problem. Despite that challenge, they managed to spend more than an hour with about 25 prisoners giving thanks to God and sharing testimonies of changed lives. Afterward, there was some time to mingle and, not surprisingly, Leah & Jess were very popular with the men. They even called each of them “Barbie.” As we were leaving the prison, Doug Kirk said; “What a great group of Christian men. They made me feel right at home.” After a short pause, Leah said: “I didn’t really feel at home.”

Meanwhile, a second group (Marge, Colleen, Pauline, Irine, Jen and Gwen) were visiting the “informal community” of Ugai. This is a little community which is very poor and lacking in basic necessities but they are starting to show some progress (recently, they added a school and a new community center). The team brought a number of clothing items to hand out, and they interacted with the residents to encourage and connect with them. An invitation was given for them to become involved in the new church plant in Tlacalula which is not far from where they live.

After a very full day of activities, we were welcomed back to Casa Hogar by the older youth who wanted to put on a special supper for us. They showed us a slide show of their many outreach activities in the region and they performed a drama and a song. Then they served us supper (at about 9:00 pm). These are very impressive teens who are doing some amazing work to share their faith in this part of region.

Tomorrow is our last day for most of the team. Both the Eadys and the Kirks will be staying for a while longer, but the rest of us will be leaving for home early Friday morning. It has been a stretching and challenging experience to be here but as always, it has been well worth the effort. We will miss the staff and children, and will definitely want to make sure that KBC sends another team next year.

Monday was an full day with many significant things happening. Since it was a Mexican holiday, we all got to sleep in and go to breakfast at 8:00 instead of 7:00. After breakfast the women all piled in the van to visit a local prison where Elaine Croft teaches quilting. This provides an opportunity for her to work with the women and help them to earn some income while they are in prison. Later this week the men will travel with Ian to visit a men’s prison.

Back at Casa Hogar one team of men were working to upgrade the septic system while a second group were working to build new bed frames for Jess Perkins and Leah Orvis. We are hoping to have both these projects finished before the end of the week.

In the evening, the we babysat the younger children in order to give the regular house parents an evening off. While Frank, Doug and Jonathan made animal balloons and played games like Twister, the women were over with the girls giving manicures and pedicures. Marge and Bill had the special task of supervising the Cuna (the pre-schoolers). They had fun giving piggy back rides and watching Thomas the Train until everyone was sent off to bed. All in all, it was a very special evening reminding us of the reason we are working so hard to make a healthy environment for these precious children.

There are many organizations that provide an opportunity to sponsor needy children but Foundation for His Ministry is one that allows sponsoring families to actually visit the children and interact with them. Bill and Gwen are here with the child they sponsor Sol. They took this photo so they could leave her a picture and help her to remember that she is loved.

Only a few more days of work and we will be heading back to the cold realities of our Canadian winter. Each of us on the team is working hard to make every moment count and do everything we can for the children.

Sunday started with worship at a church in Tlacalula. This is a new church that the children and staff have been attending. As you can imagine the music was lively, energetic and loud. The space they are using for the church was donated free of charge and has been transformed from a run down building into a beautiful, functional worship space. While we did not understand much of the Pastor’s message (which lasted for more than an hour), we did enjoy the fellowship of being with our brothers and sisters in Christ in worship.

This weekend has provided a chance for the team to do some traveling around the region to see some sights. It is particularly impressive to visit Monte Alban which was the ancient capital of the Zapotek Indians in the region for centuries. We also had a visit to a new birthing center that opened on Saturday. This is the work of a partner organization but we were able to help with some decorating to put the finishing touches on the center.

Everyone is healthy and there are no more injuries to report. There are many hazards all round that we have had to learn to avoid. In this photo, Marge was helping in the kitchen removing cactus spikes before cooking the cactus for lunch. See, she still has all 5 fingers (oh, wait it looks like one is missing). Seriously, we are very thankful that no one has been sick and aside from some small scrapes and bruises we are all healthy.

We just managed to stay ahead of the snow and arrived in Mexico on schedule after a long day of travel. It was very special to arrive and to be greeted by Jess Perkins and Leah Orvis. They have recently started working at Casa Hogar and so it was like coming home.

Wednesday was our day for orientation and the beginning of our work. While most teams want to build something substantial (like a house or a school) the staff were really hopeful that our team would be able to help with some projects which they didn’t have time to do such as clearing the cob webs from the high ceiling in the dining hall or cleaning the windows and fixing the damaged screens. Everyone was very happy to be able to serve and we set about doing the various jobs assigned.

Coming from the deep freeze of Canada, it is taking everyone some time to adjust to the elevation (5,000 ft) and heat (daytime high of 28 to 30 degrees). We have had to be very careful to stay hydrated and to avoid lengthy periods of hard work in the sun. By now (Thursday evening), most of us have acclimatized but we’ve had our share of injuries; two twisted ankles, blisters, scraped knees and the like.

The biggest setback happened yesterday (Wednesday) when we received word that Bob Pauhl’s father was in critical condition and was not expected to live more than few days. By today (Thursday), the decision was made to take him off life support, so it has been a hard time to be so far from home for Bob. As of tonight, he is planning to fly back to Canada tomorrow to be with his family. It has been beautiful to see the team coming around Bob with support and friendship.

Our days are filled with a great deal of laughter and fun as we work together. Sometimes the communication is a struggle but that often leads to great fun too. Today, when Marge took a turn helping in the kitchen, she introduced herself to the cook who does not speak much English. The cook looked at her and said; “Marge? Marge … Simpson?” She asked if we were from Springfield. A little while later, Marge held up a tablespoon and asked her “what is this called?” She replied (in English) “A Tablespoon.”

The interactions with the children are always special. Many are eager to connect and interact. This afternoon, two children came into the kitchen and very excitedly grabbed Jonathan by the hand and tried to get him to come with them. They ran across the courtyard, each holding one hand. It turns out, they were doing a scavenger hunt and they had to bring back “a gringo.”

Tomorrow we continue to work around Casa Hogar. There are many things which require a ‘deep cleaning’ and some projects which include things like a new filter for the septic system and new beds for Leah and Jess. Thanks for all your prayers.

- The Right People … In the Right Places … For the Right Reasons

Spritual Gifts Seminar is a proven process of identifying and placing people into meaningful places of service where they can be fruitful and fulfilled. It is a practical introduction and reflection of a more biblical way of serving. Learn more about Spiritual Gifts.

How does Spritual Gifts Seminar work?
Spritual Gifts Seminar is a simple 3-step process that moves us from the theology of, “The Body Of Christ” (Romans 12:3-8), into the practical and God-honouring experience of it.:
Step 1: The Discovery step helps us to discover our God-given Servant Profile (Passion, Spiritual Gift, and Personal Style) through a series of 6 sessions. These step-by-step studies lead us to better understand our place in God’s design for KBC. Network values people and their God-given uniqueness and is realistic and practical.

Step 2: A One-on-One Consultation follows the Discovery step. This personal interaction provides individualized attention for each volunteer in helping them find an appropriate place of service which reflects who God has made them to be.

Step 3: Getting involved. The goal of Spritual Gifts Seminar is Service and step three is using your spiritual gifts.

Hello and Welcome! My name is Jonathan Mills and welcome to the web pages of Kanata Baptist Church (KBC). The people of KBC are ordinary people just like you. We share one primary common interest; we want to grow in our knowledge and experience of God in our daily lives. Some people are quite a long way on that journey of discovery. Others are just starting. And others are tentatively exploring … not quite ready to make a definite commitment, but not comfortable doing nothing. Whatever your experience of faith in Jesus, we welcome you to continue your journey at KBC. At KBC you will find a community of people who are interested . . . → Read More: Welcome

Hello and welcome to Kanata Baptist church.
Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. (1 Timothy 1:15)
For two thousand years this message has called people away from vain and selfish earthly priorities to a new life of forgiveness, freedom and humble service under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. From this humble starting point of faith God calls us to die to the world and come to life through the indwelling Spirit of Christ. These are the principles and priorities which draw us together as a community of believers at Kanata Baptist church; salvation through faith in Jesus Christ and daily living under His lordship. We believe that the Bible speaks to us today just as it has to generations down through the years and its relevance and authority have not diminished even though our world has changed dramatically.
I would like to invite you to join us in this great adventure. Not to a mindless obedience to a dusty set of rules and regulations or to a luddism which criticizes others from the vantage point of self-righteous piety but rather, to a living, vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ. Our congregation is gathered from all walks of life and backgrounds those who are united by this journey of faith. We want to know Jesus and discover each day how our lives can be transformed through God’s Spirit to make a difference that lasts for all eternity.
Jonathan Mills,
Pastoral Team Leader.

“… where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Corinthians 3:17)
